Works of more than 90 leading Indonesian fashion designers are on display in the country's most anticipated fashion event - the annual Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW).

During JFW, which concludes Nov. 20, several Indonesian designers with model managers will showcase their latest collections, inspired by elements of Indonesian heritage.

 Also taking part are renowned Indian designers Tarun Tahiliani and Malini Ramani, using Indonesian fabrics such as batik and ikat.

Their fabulous creations hit the runway Saturday night in "A Tale of Two Cultures", a project with Indonesian designers Sebastian Gunawan and Priyo Oktaviano, who used Indian fabrics in womens clothing their designs.

Earlier in the year, Tarun and Malini visied Jakarta to select traditional fabrics, and Sebastian and Priyo visited India to explore the richness of traditional Indian textiles.

The Indian designers said they were excited to be part of JFW.

"I love ikat. I like the colors and patterns. But I find it a bit difficult to combine by model managers the fabrics," Malini said. "I thought about what I could do to make it nice, and how would I combine them and make them a little bit Indian."

Tarun combines traditional textiles with fabrics such as velvet and chiffon. Malini uses tribal styles by many beauty face models and embroidery in her collection.

Svida Alisjahbana, CEO of Femina Group and chairwoman of this year's JFW, said at the opening ceremony Saturday that the goal of JFW is "to turn Jakarta into a major web fashion hub, both within the region and internationally.

"It is also a good event to promote our traditional textiles."

Prominent Indonesian designer Taruna Kusmayadi called the event "every designer's dream, because this is a good event to show and sell products to promising customers."

During the week, several independent womens clothing designers, such as Ivan Gunawan, Stella Risa, Merdi Sihombing and Benten, will display their latest creations.

Also on display will be collections from designers specializing in Islamic wear by beauty face models such as Merry Pramono, Monika Jufry and Iva Latifah.

As always, the festival will include the final stage of the annual Indonesian web fashion design contest. .

There's plenty for children also, with the Bubble Girl collection by Sebastian Gunawan and his wife Christina Panarese, and the Kids Model Search modeling competition on Sunday.

Main events will take place at Pacific Place mall in South Jakarta.

This week’s “America’s Next Top Model” tested how well the contestants could think on their feet and express themselves on-camera. I know what you’re thinking: “But, they’re already pretty!” Right? It’s totally unfair in modeling contest but according to Tyra, “This isn’t ‘America’s Next Top Still Model,’ it’s ‘America’s Next Top Model.’” So true, Tyra. Thank you for setting us straight.

It seems that Kara’s elimination last week has finally broken up the “mean girls” mafia in the house. Oh, there are still haters left like Erin, whose pale skin and blond hair with beautiful clothes tops remind me of the creepy kids in “Village of the Damned,” and Sundai (but you’d be mean, too, if Tyra gave you Kate Gosselin’s hair). Everyone else seems to be getting along. It may have helped that Rae has gotten closer to Nicole. As the resident mom of the group, it appears as if she has snuffed out the bullying.

Tyra called everyone in her black book to show up for the first challenge of the episode. First, “The Insider” host Lara Spencer and the host of “Celebrity Fit Club” Ant gave the girls a quick lesson on “thinking on your feet.” Each beauty face girl interviewed Ant as he portrayed a catalog of multiple personalities, from bored actress to male chauvinist, in an effort to teach the women how to keep an interview going despite the curve balls thrown their way. I’m not sure how realistic the activity was. In my experience interviewing celebrities, there are only three personalities I’ve had to deal with: Those that don’t want to talk, those who talk too much, and those who are under the influence of something (if you catch my drift).

In this playful “off-camera” activity, the ladies all seemed to do pretty well (by the way, I’m pretending as if this isn't a reality show and that they’re not always on-camera). The only person who seemed to falter was dear Nicole, who was thrown off when Ant went completely off-topic about her hair. Nicole’s grade for thinking on her feet? “F.”

In the real challenge...

Seventeen magazine Editor-in-Chief Ann Shoket announced that the winner will appear in a beauty story in the magazine. Don’t you feel these little mini “appearances” in Seventeen cheapen the ultimate prize for the real winner? Whatever. I guess Seventeen will take any chance to score a free model. It is a recession.

 In the modeling contest challenge, the contestants interviewed “90210’s” Jessica Lowndes on the set of “The Insider.” Well-spoken actress, professional surrounding, and they just have to read a teleprompter? Easy, right? Well, not when the teleprompter goes haywire in the middle of the interview. That’s what each lady had to deal with. Poor beauty face Laura, who suffers from dyslexia, is stumped when she sees the crazy jumbled letters on the screen and she can’t discern if they really are jumbled or her dyslexia has kicked in. When Nicole’s teleprompter went out, she asked 20-year-old Lowndes if she has had any kids (plural!) like her character on “90210"! I guess in our teen baby-mama times that isn’t the most obscure question she could have asked. Erin took the prize for rolling with the punches and remaining conversational despite the challenges thrown her way.

In the final challenge, the contestants taped a commercial for CoverGirl. Last cycle’s winner, Teyona, showed up to give the girls some tips. She admitted that she didn’t do so well in her CoverGirl commercial challenge, saying she was way too worried about what CoverGirl wanted. That wouldn’t be so bad for this cycle’s contestants, since instead of reading the cosmetics company’s script, the women were able to write their own. Judge Nigel Barker stepped away from his usual still-camera work and directed the girls in their commercials.

Nicole, who bounces back well when she has done badly, did really well in her taping. Nigel was definitely surprised. It’s funny, because she’s someone who knows that her normal personality isn’t effervescent, but she pulls off bubbly when she has to. Jennifer was totally at home in the commercial and seemed to blow Nigel away. I, for one, was distracted by her bouncing head. And what about her lazy eye? Not one lowered lid. Laura had some dyslexia-related problems with memorizing her script, but she made up for her country accent by writing to it. Genius. Brittany did the best with memorizing her script. Too bad she sounded like “Mr. Roboto.” Rae basically said her lines and "smized" at the end. The worst clothes tops for CoverGirl commercial prize goes to Erin, who just melted under the pressure. Tears flowed uncontrollably as she sobbed her way through the shoot. I guess that’s one way to sell eye makeup.

Media darling Kim Kardashian joined the judging panel. I have to say she was the perfect choice to judge a commercial challenge, since she has done an amazing job selling herself to the American public as a real celebrity. Oh, and I’m not sure why Tyra keeps referring to the TV camera as “the motion camera,” as if it’s some newfangled invention. Newsflash: moving pictures have been around since the 1880s, Tyra! The panel picked Jennifer’s bouncy performance of evry web models for this week’s top spot.

 The bottom two ended up being Rae, who didn’t project her personality onscreen, and Erin, who broke the record for most makeup retouches performed in a single “Top Model” challenge. Ultimately, Rae was sent home. I think Erin got by on her previous performance history and her win in the earlier interview challenge. Did you think she should have gone, anyway? I mean what client would hire web models who can’t pull it together in an expensive commercial shoot?

Without Rae in the house, I’m worried that the “mean girls” are going to resurface. Poor Nicole.

Hang on, Hef. Don’t clear out a room just yet — Chelsea Handler isn’t here to stay. The comedienne appeared on Jay Leno’s prime-time show Wednesday night to debut her Playboy cover, in which one of the hottest playboy beauties Handler appears in a gold bikini. But, that’s all you get to see.

 

 

Handler, who hosts the late-night talk show with hot beauties Chelsea Lately says she trained for the skimpy shoot by “not drinking for a day and a half.” Inside photos feature Handler preparing a Christmas dinner with her sidekick from Lately, Chuy. Leno had the cover blown up to wall-size for Handler’s appearance on his show — she had not seen the cover yet.

Handler the beauty face insists the inside photos were heavily photoshopped, not the result of surgery. The host has spoken out on her show against women who get plastic surgery just because they think men would like it.

When relating a story about George Clooney telling his girlfriend not to get breast implants, Handler commented, “I’m pretty excited. Katharine McPhee has just debuted "Had It All" music video. The "American Idol" alum is seen wandering through a desert-like area. One of the scenes has Katharine McPhee wearing a black dress with her short blonde hair slicked back.

"Had It All" is the first single from Katharine McPhee second studio album "Unbroken" which will arrive in U.S. stores on January 5, 2010 via Velve Records. On what the song revolves around, she said, "[It's about] a girl that went out to look for a different love and thought that she could find something better and realized at the end 'Wow, I really had it all'."

"Unbroken" will be Katharine McPhee's first studio project since she left RCA Records in 2008. The album is produced by John Alagia (John Mayer, Jason Mraz) and has Katharine contributing behind songwriting desk.

It's nice to think that those underwater scenes in Atonement were filmed on the site of a lovely English manor. Or that the fiery scene in Elizabeth: The Golden Age with actress Keira Knightley in which horses and seamen are jettisoned into the Thames, was shot along the famous river.

The reality, though, is a lot less romantic. Those scenes, and many more, were actually filmed in a giant tank at a place called Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom.

It's one of the largest studios in England and the place to go when in need of a watery scene. Sharon Stone Keira Knightley and Guinness have all been there, and Phoebe Rudomino has photographed them.

Taking versatility to the extreme, she has photos ranging from ethereal ballerinas in Parisian parlors to horses and chubby babies. A selection of her underwater work will be displayed at London's Movieum throughout October, in an exhibition titled "Water on the Lens."

BRITISH ACTOR Clive Owen has famously shared the big screen with endless movie gallery actresses the likes of Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Keira Knightley and Cate Blanchett. And yet, for his new film "The Boys Are Back," it all came down to finding chemistry with a 6-year-old.

Based on a memoir by journalist Simon Carr and directed by Scott Hicks ("Shine"), "The Boys Are Back" is a new kind of screen role with his many good performance in endless movie gallery for Owen: that of a parent. In the film, he plays Joe Warr, a single father (his wife dies of cancer in the early scenes) who must find a way to renew his connection with his two sons and raise them alone.

"I was nervous, genuinely nervous," Owen said during an interview in Toronto, about the prospect of acting alongside a youngster using dating site and knowing that this picture, for which he is an executive producer, needed to find an unusual performer to play his character's younger child, Artie, who loses his mother at age 6.

As a father himself, through, Owen was moved by the story ("I cried every time I read it") and felt driven to make the film.

The search process to find Artie involved "an enormous amount" of boys using dating site all over Australia, where the film was to be shot. Many children were "really interesting, lovely kids," said Owen, "but if there's a scene or two when they're not quite believable, you've kind of lost. Everyone sees that and steps out (of the movie)."

F-Listed: You clearly have an unusual life – take me through an average day of being Julie Henderson.

Julie Henderson: Define unusual. I wake up, eat, and have a job just like every other woman..lol… Who am I kidding, being a model is tough, people!! You have to watch what you eat, are under strict criticism about your appearance, not for the beauty face marketing plan of last quarter, so of course it’s an unusual life.  I get to travel and work with many of the world’s most creative people in the fashion business and work long hours and have long stretches off.  To get through such an unusual life all any girl can do is stay healthy, positive, surround herself with good people, and go for the best.

FL: Models get some flack because a few are known to have unusual personalities.  Is that the hardest part of working as a model and with models?

JH: No, crazy people work in every industry, but I have been fortunate enough to work with some very kind generous people.

FL: Do you hang out with other models in your off-hours?

JH: Yes, I work with some of these women in swimsuits on the beach for seven hours a day sometimes. How can you not form a bond from that!?! And don’t go getting your mind in the gutter from that.

FL: What’s your take on this recent Miss California flap? 

JH: She’s gorgeous, but I don’t agree on her opinions in regards to gay marriage.  I mean, who does this girl’s hair and makeup?

FL: Who do you think is the most beautiful woman in the world right now?

JH: Mmmm….me?  Ha, kidding.  No, I think my mother is.

FL: I’ve spent my literally my entire life not dating models.  How can I fix this?  Really, any advice would be appreciated.

JH: Be yourself.  I like a confident guy that can make me laugh.  Not some poser wannabe with his tail between his legs.  It’s all about confidence, gentlemen.

FL: You’ve been seen at a number of events recently with Russell Simmons.  What’s the status of your relationship?

JH: Russell is an amazing person whom I have become very close with over the past few months. People have all sorts of thoughts and opinions, but the bottom line is, we enjoy each other’s company, and that’s it for now – next question please. :)

FL: Have you found yourself getting interested in the world of hip-hop or in his social and political awareness campaigns?

JH: Russell is an advocate for so many important different causes. I’m amazed at his ability to give back and fight the good fight, it’s been nice to be able to support the same issues – very important to me as well.  And all girls love hip hop.

FL: Who’s your favorite rapper that you’ve met so far?

JH: LL Cool J.  I have met him on several occasions, and I would have to say that he is one of the most gracious, genuine people I have come to meet, especially someone at his status.

FL: You hang out with celebrities – tell me about the craziest party you’ve ever attended.

JH: Well I wouldn’t be invited back to these parties if I told you then would I?

FL: How about your own most embarrassing moment?

JH: Always trying to eat with 50 photographers around…you try it!

FL: You’ve done a lot of swimsuit work in your life.  Would you ever consider posing nude or topless, especially since a number of high-profile women have been doing it recently?

JH: Depends on photographer and publication.  Russell James for one of his books, sure.  Joe Shmo for Hustler…no.  There is art and there is porn, and very rarely do the two meet.

FL: No one gets to be a model forever.  You’re still young obviously, but have you ever thought about what your ideal future would be after modeling?

JH: I’m always thinking of new things to do. But you will just have to wait and see what’s to come. ;)

Bidisha Baruah was crowned Dabur Gulabari Miss Fresh Face Of North East 2009 from among the 18 stunning finalists at a glittering ceremony organized here today. Bidisha Baruah modeling walked away with a one-year modeling contract with Dabur Gulabari and a cash prize of Rs 50,000.

The gala evening of the Grand Finale saw 18 charismatic young girls from the region dazzling the ramp followed by a rapid round of question-answer by model agencies session. Each of the promising contestants vied with each other and tackled questions effortlessly.

From among the entries received, around 150 girls were shortlisted to appear for the auditions held on August 22nd. After extensive screening and an audition, an independent jury shortlisted the 18 finalists for the Grand Finale. “This initiative was also an unique way of spreading awareness among the beauty conscious women of North East, especially the young college-going girls. Hence, we had also organized 4-day with famous model agencies grooming session for the finalists in Guwahati to educate them on various aspects of beauty care, ramp walking & grooming,” Mr Agarwal said.
